2022 Peony Shop Holland Offers 47 Herbaceous Hot 100 Peonies

Peony Shop Holland Offers 47 Herbaceous Hot 100 Peonies

There are so many pretty new peony cultivars over at Peony Shop Holland that are on the Southern Peony 2022 Herbaceous Hot 100 Peony Catalog Price Comparison List. The top grower on the list is actually a Dutch grower based in the Netherlands called Peony Shop Holland.

Peony Shop Holland is offering 47 distinct varieties on our Herbaceous Hot 100 list - (the most ever! since I've been compiling my list). I did notice that many of the peonies offered on the Peony Shop Holland list are Roger Anderson / Swenson Gardens hybridized varieties - that I haven't yet seen Swenson Gardens offer for sale (like all of the Peony 'Joyful ...' series peonies). I guess Swenson Gardens had too many new introductions and decided to sell some of them to Peony Shop Holland for propagation.

Peony Shop Holland is mostly wholesale, but I believe they will sell to anyone. However I think the shipping costs to the US can be prohibitive unless you are able to get together a group order. Here is a description of them from their web site: "Our peony nursery is specialized in growing and multiplying exclusive, high quality peony roots and flowers. Peonyshop.com is a family-owned business run by Jeremy and Joshua (brothers). We propagate our peonies the traditional way and don’t use Meristem culture. The peony flowers are mainly sold in the Netherlands. The roots are exported all over the world, mostly to wholesale peony buyers." 2022 Peony 'Lembrose' Most Expensive Peony Ever $2,500.00

Peony 'Lembrose' for Sale for $2,500.00 at Swenson Gardens

One shocking piece of news that came out of my work on the 2022 Herbaceous Hot 100 Peony Catalog Price Comparison List was the price tag on a new cultivar, Peony 'Lembrose', the biggest price tag I have ever seen. The only description on this very expensive peony (aside from the stats: 32" tall, 38" wide, double, mid) are, "Need we say more? The apex of new peony cultivars?", which is not much of a description to me. The Swenson Gardens web page does show several photos of the bloom as is progresses and opens, and it is very pretty.

Honestly, I'm not sure how I feel about this super expensive price tag. Does it mean that peonies are becoming more valuable? Is that good for the peony world? Does it mean that peonies are becoming more inaccessible to the average gardener? How do you feel about these new higher prices for new peony variety introductions? Would you pay $2,500.00 for one peony root? If you have a comment, please leave your thoughts below in the "Post a Comment" box.

2022 Swenson Gardens Offer 43 Intersectional Peony Varieties for Sale!

Wow! It is a record! Swenson Gardens is offering 43 distinct varieties of Intersectional Peonies for sale this year in 2022! This is the first year since I've been tracking Intersectional Peony prices (way back in our Southern Peony 2013 Intersectional Peony Catalog Price Comparison List) that any peony grower has offered 40 or more intersectional peony varieties for sale. This really speaks to how popular this type of peony has become over the years. It brings joy to my heart to see this type of interest and availability in Intersectional Peonies, as this type of peony grows and performs really well here in the South!

Swenson Gardens Intersectional Peonies

From the Swenson Gardens web site and emails, it looks like this is their 20th anniversary as well. So if you are interested in seeing all 43 photos in their digital catalog - the entire Swenson Gardens Intersectional Peony 2022 offering on one page, head on over to the Swenson Gardens web site and click on their "INTERSECTIONALS" link. If you are interested to see how their prices stack up against other peony growers, be sure to check out our Southern Peony 2022 Intersectional Peony Catalog Price Comparison List.

2019 Peony 'Miss America' Featured in Plant Delights Nursery February Flyer

Peony 'Miss America' in Plant Delights Nursery Flyer

I got a nice flyer in the mail this month from Plant Delights Nursery. It is advertising their upcoming open houses this weekend and next weekend. They are only open once a season for 2 weekends - so 8 total weekends a year. The flyer also features some special plants they'd like to highlight, and I couldn't help but notice the large photo of Peony 'Miss America' in the bottom right corner. Peony 'Miss America' is an American Peony Society Gold Medal Winner. It is a lovely semi-double white peony that can range from a few layers of white petals with a bright yellow center to a very full petalled semi-double where the yellow center is barely visible. I guess Plant Delights is making sure their customers remember to purchase and plant their potted peonies now for a good spring show! I am also thinking about the hellebore show they are going to have going on in their greenhouses in the next couple of weeks. If you haven't been before it's definitely worth the trip. :)

2018 Peony 'Pink Double Dandy' aka 'Keiko' for Sale at Song Sparrow

Klehm's Introduces New Itoh Peonies for Sale

Finally! My favorite intersectional peony so far, Peony 'Pink Double Dandy' also known as Peony 'Keiko' is for sale at Klehm's Song Sparrow. They just sent out a note this afternoon saying that they'd just added it to their catalog. This is the first time in 5 years that a peony grower has offered it in their catalog. I've been doing my intersectional peony Price Lists since 2013, and this is the first time it has ever been on the list. (I just updated the list today to include these 2 new offerings.) This peony is a Southern Peony Best Performer, 2015 Peony 'Keiko' (Adored) Best Performer - Week 4, and several people have asked me how to get their hands on one. Before now, you would have had to purchase your plant from a local nursery that carried Monrovia plants and found it for sale as Peony 'Keiko' (that's how I got mine) or been lucky enough to purchase it at an APS auction (ultra-rarely offered there either).

Peony 'Pink Double Dandy'
aka 'Keiko'™ 愛幕 (Adored)

While the photos of the peony in Klehm's email are very pretty, they just don't do the flower justice. Take a look at the photo above of Peony 'Pink Double Dandy' aka Peony 'Keiko'™ 愛幕 (Adored) that was taken in my garden this year. If you're still looking for this peony, now's your chance to snag one. I really think this peony has the potential to become an APS Gold Medal winner. It blooms for weeks, has very full double flowers, and holds its color well. In addition to 'Pink Double Dandy', it looks they are offering another selection by hybridizer Don R. Smith. (Read more about Don in my interview with him here, 2016 Peony Hybridizer Interview - Don R. Smith.) Klehm's Song Sparrow is also offering intersectional Peony 'Yankee Doodle Dandy'. According to my Price Lists, this one has only been offered once in the last 5 years, in 2013 by Peony's Envy. So this is another rare opportunity to snag another one of Don Smith's gorgeous Itohs. I just might have to snag this one myself. ;-)

2018 Hollingsworth Nursery Updates Catalog Adds 6 New Hot 100 Herbaceous Peonies

Hollingsworth Peonies
Adds 6 New Hot 100 Herbaceous Peonies

I just got an email from Hollingsworth Peonies saying they've updated their catalogs after checking their field inventories. I guess that's good news for them (and for us)! They added 6 new Hot 100 Herbaceous peonies that they weren't offering earlier this year (bringing their total offerings on the 2018 list up to 19!). So I've updated the full 2018 Herbaceous Hot 100 Peony Catalog Price Comparison List with all of their new offerings. When I saw they were offering Peony 'Nelda's Joy', I just had to buy it. Ever since I saw it in Bill Seidl's garden in 2016, 2016 Peony 'Dreamtime' Pollen from Bill Seidl's Garden, I have wanted it, but I hadn't seen it offered anywhere (until now)! Not to mention Don Hollingsworth himself named it as one of his newest registrations that he was most excited about in my interview with him in 2016, 2016 Peony Hybridizer Interview - Don Hollingsworth.

Hollingsworth Peonies also mentioned that they marked some items that were previously sold out as back in stock. So if there was something you missed out on earlier this year, you might want to check their web site now to see if it is back in stock. Also while I was purchasing peonies from Hollingsworth Peonies, I decided I should pick up a Peony 'Lavon' as well since it won the APS Best in Show award this year at the 2018 American Peony Society Convention, 2018 Peony 'Lavon' APS 2018 Best in Show. I love the double decker type peonies anyway, and this looks to be an excellent one! I can't wait to see how both of these Hollingsworth hybridized peonies perform for me here in my Southern garden!

2018 Peony 'Yellow Crown' on Front Cover of k. van Bourgondien Catalog

k. van Bourgondien Catalog Cover Spring 2018
Peony 'Yellow Crown'

It was nice to receive an 8X10 full color glossy catalog in the mail with a photo of a yellow intersectional peony on the front of it. I have ordered from k. van Bourgondien in the past, but have unsubscribed from their catalog. I guess they decided to send me one more, and when I received this one with its huge, yellow intersectional blooms on the front, I couldn't help but smile. I know that it may be a gamble to order from them, and the prices are temptingly low $35 each or 3 for $80 (for most varieties), but you may not get the varieties you are hoping for. If nothing else, hopefully this will get people more interested in peonies. Intersectional peonies are such great growers, even if we just get one mislabeled variety into the hands of more gardeners, it will pique their interest in peonies and make them hungry for more! Then hopefully we can point them in the direction of more reliable, direct from the peony farm growers. :-)

2017 One More Peony Order in Peony Paradise

Remember that snow we got this past weekend? Okay so maybe it wasn't much of a snow. Some people were just calling it "dry rain". Well anyway... What better way to spend a snowy weekend morning than shopping for peonies online? It's cold outside, the weather's icky, and no one wants to go out. So why not stay indoors, dream of big gorgeous peony blooms and springtime, go to peony paradise if you will - figuratively and literally. Okay, okay, I confess. I found a few more peonies in Peony Paradise that I just decided I couldn't live without. The reason I placed the order was for Peony 'Roselette's Baby'. It appears to be a newish? introduction from Adelman. The description says it is a sport of Peony 'Roselette', but with much more color. I couldn't resist adding another bright early peony to my collection.

With this bright red color and the name Peony 'Cherry Ruffles', I decided this upstanding multi-petaled red peony needed to take a trip over to my garden. Peony 'Carolina Moon', a white peony with a "yellow glow", seems like it would be right at home here too. :-) If you've never purchased peonies from Peony Paradise aka Adelman Peony Gardens, you are in for a treat. I received their 2017 catalog in the mail recently, and they have totally redesigned it. It is gorgeous! It's not just the cover, but the interior, descriptions, everything has been redesigned. They also say they are cleaning their mailing list. So if you do get their catalog and want to keep it, you need to contact them!

2013 P. Rockii Peony Seeds from Cricket Hill Garden

Last week I got the Tree Peony P. Rockii Seeds I ordered from Ebay. They apparently came from Cricket Hill Garden. I wasn't sure, but I thought these seeds might come from a private individual. The seeds came with a very nice catalog from Cricket Hill Garden as well. I think they normally charge $2.00 for a copy of their catalog. So I've never gotten a copy since I don't like to pay for catalogs. It looks like Cricket Hill Garden is using Ebay as a creative marketing tool - sell some seeds, send a free catalog. The catalog actually has some interesting information about Japanese and Chinese tree peonies, which is great since I don't know a lot about the differences and history of both of these type of peonies. So I was very happy to receive the catalog with the seeds. The Ebay auction was for "15 Fresh Tree Peony P. Rockii Seeds USA GROWN", and they actually send 20 seeds. So that was nice of them. I will definitely be leaving them positive feedback on Ebay! I can't wait to see how these grow!

2013 Spring Peony Catalogs

I was sad to receive an email this year saying that Klehm's Song Sparrow will no longer be publishing a print catalog. The internet, that I love and with which I publish this blog, has created a different & cheaper way of communicating with customers. It is with great sorrow that I let go of these printed catalogs that I could read at my leisure, without having to pay an electricity bill to view them! I hope all of the other peony catalogs do not go this way. The only catalogs I've received this year were from Adelman Peony Gardens, Gilbert H. Wild, and Homestead Farms. Also I just received my American Peony Society bulletin last week, and in it there was a letter stating that Hollingsworth Peonies was sold and they will no longer be mailing a print catalog either. It seems they will only be publishing their catalog online now too. How sad. I hope the nursery continues to offer great peonies as it has in the past. I have gotten some great peonies and some great advice from Hollingsworth Peonies.
