2019 Peony Blooms Week 3 Early Mid

The very early herbaceous peonies have definitely started to come out this week (mostly single and semi-double). It was nice to see a beautiful bloom on Peony 'Nova' this year, as I often don't get to see it (due to cold bud blast) or only get to see cold damaged flowers. Peony 'Coral Fay' offered her bright and deep reliable, early color again this year. 'Coral Sunset' just started to pop this week, and this bloom on Peony 'Paladin' was more gorgeous than usual with so many petals. Peony 'Horizon' went nuts this year with so many blooms! Peony 'Dreamtime' is just as I expected, and I am so grateful to see this one bloom for the first time. It really is "Dreamy"! Peony 'Roselette's Baby' didn't disappoint with her very dark and moody petals. Peony 'Juliska' also bloomed for the first time this year as well, and it was a nice early surprise to have such a large double blooming much sooner than the rest.

2019 Peony Hybridizing Season is Here!

It's that time! Time to hybridize peonies!! Somehow between my new job, shuttling kids to/from school, homework, housework, etc. I have found a bit of time to start this important task of hybridizing my peonies! Perhaps it was my first success in hybridizing, getting my own intersectional peonies to finally germinate this year, 2019 I Finally DID IT! My First Intersectional Peony Seedling-s!, that propels me forward during this super busy time in my life. I am grateful to have this opportunity, and will do my best to make the most of it.

This year was a little different than previous hybridizing years, in that my tree peony bloom season did not really overlap with my early herbaceous peony bloom season. Most years, I am able to harvest fresh pollen directly off of some of my tree peonies to pollinate the herbaceous peonies with. Not this year! This year, the only tree peony that is still in bloom with my herbaceous peonies is Tree Peony 'Angel Emily'. So this year, I saved most of my tree peony pollen in tubes in the fridge. (Luckily I had already purchased the tubes last year on Amazon.) I was planning to use the tubes (instead of aluminum foil) to freeze the pollen for use in future years as well. I will likely freeze any leftover refrigerated pollen this year to use in subsequent bloom seasons - which does work. Both of the intersectional peony seedlings that are now growing in my garden were made with pollen frozen from a previous year.

I am planning to go outside now to pollinate a few more ripened buds this morning before work. However I am worried about the approaching storm today. I'm not sure if any of the hybridizing work I would do today will hold. The weather reports say we are expecting tornadoes, damaging winds, and possible flooding today. Perhaps I will bag a couple with paper bags today. Or perhaps I'll just go outside and remove these sheer bags (that were from 2 days ago, in hopes their pollination is complete) to make sure these pollinated peonies don't stay too soggy. Who knows? These could all be a wash, and I will start fresh on Saturday, after these severe storms have passed. We shall see...

2019 Tree Peony 'KC Red' Blooms for the First Time

Wow! I must say I was thrilled to see the blooms open on my new Tree Peony 'KC Red'. I actually won (by bidding on) this peony in the 2018 American Peony Society Convention Auction. It was donated by Adelman Peony Gardens. The root they sent was huge, and the growth it has put on this year is evident in the high quality root they sent. It has two huge buds in its first year! I just had to capture the color of the bloom. It was a little hard to match its color to just one card, but I think the RHS "Dark Pink Red" 53C is the closest match. It's also a little hard to capture the true color of the flower. The top photo is the best representation, as the white card in the photo, helps white balance the camera. All together it is a gorgeous flower, and I would highly recommend bidding on it if it comes up in this year's APS Convention Auction, as it looks like it is already sold out at Solaris Farms this year, and I don't see it as an offering at Adelman Peony Gardens.

2019 Fake Chinese Tree Peonies on Ebay

Remember those tree peonies on Ebay I just had to have (2019 Planting Chinese Peonies from Ebay)? This is probably not a surprise to anyone, but they were fakes. :-( That's too bad since I have never seen that fully double bomb type purple tree peony offered for sale in the US before. I still would really like to be able to grow it. One of my readers seems like they may have a lead on it for me. So let's see if I am ever able to acquire one. I just wanted to let you all know in case you thought about buying one. They are just herbaceous peony roots. I don't know what color they might be, but all 4 roots I received appear to be the same herbaceous peony or rootstock.

I guess the only interesting thing about these peony roots is that they came with a couple of lily bulb sections in the box (accidental or bonus - I'm not sure). So I decided to plant them to see if they would grow. As you can see they did grow, but I'm guessing it might be a while before they turn into blooming plants. I am curious to see what kind of of lily they are and what color they will bloom. I guess I can say the same thing for the peonies as well. Only time will tell if they are anything of value that is worth growing. My guess is they will be a hot pink single, but who knows?

2019 Weak Peony Stems Knocked Down by Torrential Wind and Rain

I'm not sure that I've ever seen a massacre quite like this one. Yes, usually the weakest stems that are most susceptible to botrytis blight will usually succumb to its stem withering powers. However we've had quite the rain these last couple of days and weeks (maybe for the last year). We've had a few thunderstorms that have been quite mighty with pummeling rain and punishing winds. So I have lots of peonies in my garden whose weaker outer stems have fallen in this tragedy. These two peonies, Peony 'Lemon Chiffon' and Peony 'Horizon', are just a couple of examples of the casualties.

Some of these buds may have opened had it not been as windy. Too bad that all of buds never seem to make it to opening day for one reason or another. It would have been nice to see these peonies in bloom with even more open flowers on each bush. Oh well, I guess I will cut them off before the weakened stems transmit the disease to the healthier parts of the peony plant. No sense crying over spilled milk, I suppose. There are still lots of other blooms in the garden waiting to open!

2019 Spring Hill Nursery Peony Order Arrives

I must say I was quite impressed when my Spring Hill Nursery order arrived that I had placed last fall, 2018 Strawberry Crème Brûlée Intersectional Peony at Spring Hill Nursery. I wasn't sure exactly what to expect. Honestly I think I was expecting bare root peonies that would have a hard time establishing themselves. However they actually sent growing plants that we in approximately quart sized pots, with several sets of leaves on each plant. The plants were packaged quite well, and I actually left them in the box a day longer than they should have been since I didn't open the box the first day it arrived. They still were doing well and had plenty of moisture in the soil.

Some of the leaves were a bit bent. I'm not sure if that is from their shipping journey or perhaps just being grown in close quarters with their friends and getting a bit tangles up. Perhaps the packers had a hard time untangling them before boxing them up. I'm not sure. So they are a bit tired, and probably won't grow much more this year, but at least they have been grown well and have nice foliage on them. The black pots were bagged up with white bags and twist ties. One of the plants actually had a small immature leaf shoot trying to grow underneath the bag. I'm hoping it will still be able to grow now that I've unbagged them.

I really am looking forward to seeing these bloom. I am hoping they are all the correct varieties purchased. One advantage of having these intersectional peonies shipped as potted plants with foliage growing already is that you can tell that they actually are intersectional peonies. So I know they've gotten one thing right. That leads me to believe that perhaps these will be the correct cultivars (fingers crossed). However these are definitely small plants (most likely cloned) because come on what peony root division is going to fit in a 4 inch pot? But I don't care if they are cloned, as long as they're the right plant! We shall see. Also the 'Strawberry Creme Brulee' Intersectional peony appears to have "strawberry" pinkish colored stems, while 'Oochigeas' and 'Pastel Lilas' do not. So it seems like I have more than one variety here as well. Since they are small plants, it may take several years for them to bloom. Let's hope it's worth the wait!

2019 Peony Blooms Week 2 Early

I must say it has been a bit more challenging to snap photos now. We've also had some heavy rain this past week too. A few of these were pummeled in the heavy rain, depending on which day they opened. I can't tell if I got a great bloom on Tree Peony 'Yao Huang' or not yet. I'd like to see how it does next year as well. The P. Rockii Lavender Seedling's color was gorgeous again this year - it did not disappoint. I'm not sure if Tree Peony 'Sahohime' is the correct variety or not, as it doesn't match the photo of what I purchased it as, but I'm not sure what the correct photos is for this one anyway. However it is a lovely cultivar whatever it is and I am pleased to grow it. Tree Peony 'Shimadaijin' is a gorgeous dark purply color that really draws you in. This was the first year that Tree Peony 'Lavender Hill' bloomed for me, since the buds have been blasted by last freezes in the past, and I must say I was quite impressed. The color of Tree Peony 'Angel Emily' really surprised me this year. Maybe I don't have it's color memorized completely, but somehow the color seemed a bit more rich and maybe slightly more pinkish.

2019 Questions - Gardens with Lots of White Peonies

I received this question from Linda in Zone 7b:

"I’m a watercolor artist living in Charlotte. My absolute favorite subject is peonies, especially white ones. I’m looking for an area near me that grows a lot (LOT) of peonies that might let me come to take photos to paint. Any leads you can provide will be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure of a local place where they will have lots of white peonies blooming. Duke Gardens in Durham may be a good option. They do actually have quite a lot of herbaceous peonies growing there. I'm not sure how many are white vs. pink or red, though. Also I know the JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh has a white garden with a very large white tree peony in it. There may be some white herbaceous peonies growing there too. The Biltmore House has lots of nice gardens, and I do remember seeing many peonies there, but I did not see them in bloom (just in bud). So I'm not sure what colors they have, and they may be a bit closer for you too. It might be a good idea to call ahead to the garden to ask about their peonies, potential bloom times, and whether artists are allowed. Now would be the time to go for tree peonies. Herbaceous peonies will be blooming in a couple weeks.

2019 I Finally DID IT! My First Intersectional Peony Seedling-s!

I can't believe it. I think just when you finally give up on something, it actually happens. Self doubt creeps in, you start second guessing all of your steps, trying to figure out where you went wrong, and begin to wonder if you will ever reach your goal. You start to think it may never happen, and then it does. All of the hard work you've put in all along begins to pay off. Those thoughts of failure suddenly turn into realizations of success! As soon as that goal is reached, the next one starts to materialize. There is always something new to strive for...

Somehow after years of trying, an intentional peony cross of mine finally succeeded. These two particular intersectional seedlings started out as just a happen chance idea in 2016. During the 2016 APS Peony Convention Tour of Solaris Farms, I was learning quite a lot from Don Smith, and he asked Nate if he would allow him to collect tree peony pollen from his farm, and Nate graciously invited us to collect as much pollen as we liked. Don shared a few of his envelopes with me, and I went to work, following his lead. My eyes and heart led me towards the lavender and purple colored tree peonies. Tree Peony 'Wisteria Reflections' was blooming at the time of our visit, and this was one I collected pollen from and saved it in a separate envelope. Since Don Smith didn't have many envelopes to spare, I collected lots more pollen from a wide range of tree peony colors and put it all in one envelope, which I later labeled "Nate Bremer's Rainbow". :-)

Since my bloom season was over by the time I got home, I froze the pollen in my freezer for use the next year. That was almost 3 years ago now, and I am just now seeing the fruits of that pollen. Also it looks like I planted the seeds a bit late that year in late November, 2017 Intersectional Peony Hybridizing Efforts. So maybe if I'd planted them sooner they would have sprouted a year earlier, but who knows? I am just happy I actually got it right this time, unlike the first year I got a seedling to sprout. The only thing that sprouted that year was an accidental herbaceous peony, 2017 First Intersectional Hybrid Seedling Sprouts!. The foliage of that first sprout and these is very obviously different. That 2017 sprout had very rounded foliage with a few "pest" notches where something had eaten a few bites out of each leaf, whereas these 2019 sprouts clearly have deeper cut notched foliage that is reminiscent of tree peonies. The coloring is also different. The 2017 seedling had more red colored foliage upon sprouting with a thicker substance. These 2019 seedlings have a very intersectional grayish colored overcast to them. Very exciting! Also you never know what that first herbaceous sprout from 2017 might be good for, perhaps a good future parent. Sometimes things happen for a reason...

2019 Peony Experiments - Moving White Tree Peonies Successful

Well, I would say that my 2018 Peony Experiments - Move Mislabeled White Tree Peonies was quite successful. Perhaps it was because all of the tree peonies were very young, but all of them came through with flying colors. All of the buds that developed last fall did or will bloom this spring. I am excited to see how these tree peonies will grow in their new homes at the edge of the tree line instead of in the middle of the tree peony garden. Also I removed two very large tulip poplar tree from the tree peony garden area last fall, 2018 More Light for Tree Peonies, Sweet Gum Ball & Poplar Trees Gone! So these also are getting more light this spring than they have ever had before. So that could also be a contributing factor. Also all of these tree peonies I moved are P. Ostii seedlings. So perhaps these tree peonies are more tolerant to being moved.

Any way you slice it, I would say this experiment was definitely successful, and I would probably move tree peonies again in the future, especially young ones, as they seem to recover and adapt easily to their new surroundings. I can't wait to see how these young tree peonies grow and fill out (and hopefully) become covered in blooms! I think the moral of this story is that tree peonies can be moved and moved successfully. So if you are considering moving a tree peony, don't be afraid to do it (especially if the new home will have better growing conditions - like more sunlight!) Happy Growing!

Since my Tree Peony 'White Phoenix' bloomed so early this year, there were only 2 peonies blooming in week one this year (aside from several other P. ostii seedling that also bloomed and a p. rockii seedling that bloomed for the first time this year). So that means there are lots more tree peony blooms to look forward to next week! I apologize that the photos are not as sunny as I'd like, but with my new job, I can only snap photos after 6pm or on the weekends now. Maybe I will take a half day of vacation here and there when the blooms really start coming! Of all of these peonies, the P. Rockii seedling is definitely the most fragrant, and it smells wonderful! If you don't yet grow any tree peonies, I would start now. Tree peonies are great growers in the South, and since they bloom very early, they can really extend your peony bloom season!

My second peony bloom of the season opened today. I've had several other p. ostii seedlings open subsequently, aside from my 2019 First Peony Bloom of the Season!, Tree Peony 'White Phoenix'. Since all of the subsequent openings have all been unnamed seedlings, I'm not counting them. So there was actually a pretty big gap between the first and second peony blooms opening this year, from March 29th to April 4th. That's pretty much a whole week, just one day shy! I guess that means I need to keep collecting more tree peonies to fill in the gap!

I can't say I am super impressed by the lavender color in the peony (since it seems to be a bit on the pinkish side), but the color is still nice. It is also great to have such a colorful early blooming peony. I am also very excited to see how much it has grown since last year. It went from 1 bud in it first growing season last year to 4 buds in its second growing season this year! All of the buds look big and fat and healthy too (like they will all open)! As you can see it is already growing a second stem from below ground this year which also has it own bud. So it seems to be quite vigorous and floriferous. I'm looking forward to the rest of the buds opening and to seeing how it does next year as well. :-) The

I was excited to see some color starting to show on some of my tree peony buds today. Purple and lavender are my favorite colors so I am definitely excited to see the blooms on Tree Peony 'Lavender Grace' again this year. I just purchased and planted Tree Peony 'Lavender Grace' last year, 2018 Spring Tree Peony Planting 'Kinkaku' & 'Lavender Grace' after seeing it in 2018 Klehms Song Sparrow Offers Tree Peony 'Lavender Grace' on Front Page of Web Site. I did get to see one bud open on it last year, and this year it seems to have 3 buds growing! Let's hope all three of those buds open!

Tree Peony 'Yao Huang' was the second peony to open last year, 2018 Second Peony Bloom of the Season - 'Yao's Yellow' 姚黃 (Yao Huang), opening on the same day as Tree Peony 'White Phoenix'. This year Tree Peony 'White Phoenix' has already bloomed, now 5 days ago! These colorful tree peonies are definitely biding their time a bit more this year. My Tree Peony 'Angel Emily' already lost 3 buds this year, 2019 Tree Peony 'Angel Emily' Snapped Off! At least there are still lots more buds left, though. I think it would have had 11 buds before those 3 were snapped off. So now I guess we're down to 8 buds for this year. Oh well, 8 is better than none! I still can't wait to see them open!!!

2019 Peonies at Duke Gardens Spring Plant Sale

I've never been to Duke Garden's Spring Plant Sale before until now. I just went this past weekend to see what it was all about. The sale is an annual event for the Sarah P. Duke Gardens on the Duke University campus, and it is a fundraiser to help fund their summer intern program. I couldn't believe how many people were there, and how early they got up to get the best plants. The earlybird really did get the worm at this plant sale. The plant sale was from 8:00 am-12:00 noon. I arrived at 8:30 am, and I struggled to find a parking spot. I got lucky because one of the earlybirds was already finished their shopping and leaving!

Of course I wanted to see what peonies they had for sale there. I did see several people with peonies in their wagons, herbaceous peonies with big fat buds, and a several intersectional peonies as well. I kept asking the people with intersectional peonies in their wagons where they got them from, most couldn't remember, but the ones who did pointed me to a place that didn't have any left to purchase. So those intersectional peonies really did go fast! The only peonies I found that were still left for sale at 8:30 am were a few herbaceous peonies with a "Deer Resistant" sign on them. (The sign was so cute, I just couldn't resist snapping a photo of it!)

There were so many people there and so many plant vendors as well. Many of the plants had been propagated and potted up by the Duke Gardens staff from their own gardens. There were also specialty vendors selling everything from camellias in bloom, redbuds in bloom, peonies in bud, hellebores in bloom, ferns, hostas, annuals, and veggies. There was pretty much something for everyone. They even had a carnivorous plant tent! The local Master Gardeners were also there with their own booth giving out growing advice and selling plants they'd propagated.

The line to check out was quite long (almost 30 minutes), but I still had a great time, and I would definitely go again in the future. However I would need to go much earlier to find a parking spot before 8:00 am to see everything that's being offered at the sale. I didn't buy any peonies, but I did find a couple of things. I purchased 2 ferns and a double hellebore. The whole even was like a feeding frenzy for plant lovers. All of the people at the sale were like goldfish that had just been fed. The amount of excitement in the air was palpable. It was nice to be near that many other plant enthusiasts and feel their energy and happiness.

2019 First Peony Bloom of the Season!

Yay! It's finally here! I have been anticipating this moment for quite some time, and now it is here. I thought I'd be ready this year, but for some reason I am already feeling behind. I have a large load of free mulch sitting in my driveway (which I am very thankful for), and I have a new job I just started 2 weeks ago (which I am also very thankful for), and now it is peony season (which I am also very, very thankful for). Let's just say there's a lot going on right now... I guess that's how it usually goes, though. Feast or famine. The trick is not to eat too much at the feast, I guess. (And maybe save a little for the famine...)

Anyway, Tree Peony 'White Phoenix' was the first peony to bloom in my garden this year, pretty much the same as last year. Tree Peony 'White Phoenix' and a dwarf red fernleaf hybrid both bloomed together on the first day of the season last year on April 2nd. So it looks like our peony season is starting just a couple days earlier this year. I don't think I saw any blooms open on the red fernleaf hybrid yet this year. Tree Peony 'Yao Huang' ('Yao's Yellow') bloomed the day after Tree Peony 'White Phoenix' last year. Tree Peony 'Yao Huang' looks like it is about to pop open. So let's see if it blooms 2nd again this year.
