2013 Intersectional/Itoh Peony Buds

OMG! This is going to be an exciting year in my garden for intersectional peony blooms. I am super excited! I tried to count all of the buds I could find on the intersectional plants that I have, and it looks like there will be more varieties of intersectional peonies blooming in one year in my garden than ever before. Even some of the new plants from the 2012 Peony Experiments - Intersectional Divisions have buds on them. I took some pictures today of as many different intersectional peony buds that I could find. It looks like I have blooms developing on at least 11 different varieties! There may be more to come. I have been eagerly reviewing the intersectional peonies almost daily for buds, and each day I find more and more. Here are the pictures of the ones I have so far. They are in various stages of development...
Peony 'Bartzella'
Peony 'First Arrival'
Peony 'Garden Treasure'
Peony 'Morning Lilac'
Peony 'Pastel Splendor'
Peony 'Scarlet Heaven'
Peony 'Sequestered Sunshine'
Peony 'Singing in the Rain'
Peony 'Sonoma Amethyst'
Peony 'White Emperor'
Peony 'Yellow Crown'

  1. You have a few species that I don't have already so I might want to trade some of those with you in the fall.

One thing I'm finding interesting about itohs is that they tend to produce an abundance of buds. My 2 stem bartzella from last year is producing 15 shoots this year. Some of the other itohs are also putting up good numbers so I'm expecting some of them to flower.

  2. Steve,

I'm definitely open to trading. However some of the species types that I grow are very small, and some of them have yet to bloom. Maybe they need extra time to get acclimated to the weather here? Anyway most of the are not large enough to divide. So maybe we can compare lists of things that we can divide in the fall.

Yes, I've noticed that Peony 'Bartzella' grows very well given the proper conditions, sun, good soil, etc.
