2015 Southern Peony 'Bartzella' Winner - Launa in AL
I bet you are all wondering what happened with the 2015 Southern Peony Giveaway - Itoh Peony 'Bartzella' that was given away to celebrate 2015 Southern Peony Reaches 100,000 Pageviews! Well, after drawing 3 names, I finally got a winner that responded - Launa M. in Alabaster, Alabama. After getting her address, it took a bit of time to figure out an address to which the United States Post Office would deliver. After getting all of that figured out, her intersectional Peony 'Bartzella' was mailed last week. It looks like Alabaster is just south of Birmingham, Alabama. So Launa is in USDA growing zone 7b, the exact same growing zone as we have here at Southern Peony in NC! So Launa's 'Bartzella' peony should acclimate and settle in quickly for her, hopefully getting a great start. I hope her new peony grows well for her! Thanks again to all of our Southern Peony readers!

2015 Southern Peony Giveaway - Itoh Peony 'Bartzella'
Southern Peony Giveaway - Peony 'Bartzella'
This month, October 2015, Southern Peony is giving away a peony to one of its email subscribers to celebrate 100,000 pageviews. So if you enjoy reading about peonies, please join us! We are giving away an intersectional Itoh peony, Peony 'Bartzella'. Peony 'Bartzella' is an American Peony Society award winning peony. It has won both their Gold Medal in 2006 and their Award of Landscape Merit in 2009. Peony 'Bartzella' is also a Southern Peony Best Performer. So you know it will grow well in your garden! Intersectional peonies are a cross between a tree peony and an herbaceous peony. If you don't yet have an intersectional peony in your garden, once you get one, it won't be your last. They are easy to get addicted to! Peony 'Bartzella' is one of the most outstanding examples of an intersectional peony. Yellow is a rare color in herbaceous peonies. So this superb hybrid makes an easy to grow yellow addition to your peony garden. :)

2015 Southern Peony New How To Section
I've added a new "How To" for peonies section to the Southern Peony web site. You can find this new section using this link, Southern Peony How To, and also by clicking on "How To" on the navigation bar at the top of any page. This page should be helpful for people with questions on how to do all kinds of gardening to dos for peonies. This page includes gardening activities like cutting back a peony, deadheading peonies, dividing peonies, fertilizing peonies, planting peony seeds, and planting the three different types of peony plants as well. There are more How Tos coming in the future so keep an eye on this page for updates. Also if you have an idea or suggestion for another How To that I haven't yet covered, please Contact Me. :-)

2015 New Popular Topics, Exhibiting and Tree Peonies
The current popular topics for last month has been updated. I *try* to update this section every month with the previous month's most popular topics. So if you're interested to see what other people are reading about, check it out. Also I have made the topics chart a little easier to read, and added two new topics - Exhibiting and Tree Peonies. This was the first year ever that I brought peonies to the 2015 American Peony Society Exhibition. I've also started growing a few Tree Peonies. Hopefully everyone will find this Popular Topics table helpful, and make it easier to find what you're looking for!

2015 Peony Donation for Carolina Plant Swap
Yesterday I was so excited to be able to bring three blooming peonies to the Carolina Plant Swap. These three peonies are all unique peonies I grew from seed. They are all single blooming peonies that bloom early. Two of these peonies, a light pink one and a dark pink one, came from seed from Peony 'Pink Princess'. The other dark pink peony came from seed from Peony 'Lady Alexandra Duff'. I hope these peonies will increase in bloom and size each year and the recipients of the peonies will enjoy them for years to come. Peonies do not generally like to be moved in spring. So these need to be planted right away. These peonies may sulk a bit this year. Don't worry. Don't fertilize them or overwater them. They just need some time to get established and settled into their new homes. Next year they should come back bigger and even better! :-) Enjoy!

2013 Southern Peony Logo & Photos
Some work I've been doing for the American Peony Society has inspired me to spruce up my own web site a bit. Not only does Southern Peony have a spiffy new logo, but we also have new larger pictures with a Southern Peony watermark. With the additional security of a watermark, I'm able to bring bigger and more useful photos to you! You can check out the new, larger, watermarked photos on our Photos page. In case you haven't noticed, we update the photo on the Southern Peony main page every month with a new photo. These photos go into the Southern Peony photo archive on our Photos page to help you identify peonies, peruse the pictures to see what's available, and maybe plan your future peony purchases!!! ;-)

2013 Southern Peony Inventory
There hasn't been too much going on in the garden this summer. I have cut back a few instances of blight or dieback that I've noticed on some peony stems, but other than that, it has been a pretty good summer for peonies. We've had quite a bit of rain this year, so there have been very few instances of thirsty, droopy peony foliage. With such little stress and lots of opportunity for growth, I'm looking forward to seeing the growth in size of all the peonies next year. I've also been working quite a bit on some not-in-the-garden peony projects this summer. I recently updated my Inventory page to include hybridizer information about each variety. The new data contains the hybridizer and the year the peony variety was registered with the American Peony Society. I've also been working on a few projects for the American Peony Society itself, including another bulletin article for their September issue (look for a reprint soon), official APS peony photos, and a project to donate peonies to a local arboretum for public education and enjoyment - more details to come about all of these projects very soon!

2013 Southern Peony Milestones & Popular Topics
It wasn't all that long ago that I was writing about our first 1,000 visitors in one month back in January in my 2013 Southern Peony Milestones post. Well you all have done it again. Last month we had over 2,000 views in one month and this month the site has had over 20,000 views since Southern Peony's inception! Since then we've added a program to recognize the best peony performers in the southern climate, Southern Peony Best Performer. I am so happy about how far this site has come, and how it continues to grow and be a resource to the peony community everywhere. It looks like my efforts to reach out to readers all over the world by adding a translation tool to view 2013 Peony in Other Languages has certainly helped lots of people the world over find this site. I am still interested in getting questions from all of you in the US and all other countries. So if you have a Peony Question please Contact Me! Check out the current list of the Top 10 Most Popular Topics of All Time in the table below, and you can check out the Popular Topics page for an up to date list of our most popular peony topics!

2013 Southern Peony Best Performers
For the past couple of years now, I have been picking "Best Performers" for each week of my peony growing season. These are peonies that have just really impressed me with their blooms, their plant habit, and most importantly their ability to survive and thrive in my hot southern climate. So I've decided to collect all of this information into one place so that visitors can easily find my Southern Peony Best Performers. Also the great thing about picking a peony for each week of the growing season is that home gardeners can not only find great plants that will grow in their climate, but they can also find great plants that bloom during certain time periods so they can extend their blooming season. I will be dedicating a new Best Performers page to this endeavor that can be found on the main menu. If you are also a southern gardener and have a peony that is simply stunning in your garden, please contact me. I'm always interested in growing and evaluating new varieties that perform well.

Southern Peony Welcome
Welcome to the Southern Peony blog. This should be a good place to learn more about peonies as I learn about peonies and how they perform in southern climates. I have always loved peonies ever since I was a small girl admiring them in my grandmother's garden. This is my journey growing, evaluating, dividing, and hybridizing my favorite flower.
