2020 Peony Blooms Week 8 Very Very Late

It looks like the "Firefly"s came out this week. It is always so neat to see the wild, twisted, and striped petals on Peony 'Raspberry Firely' and Peony 'Pink Firefly'. Peony 'Candy Stipe' is always one of the last peonies to bloom in my garden, and I always look forward to it's peppermint like stipes as well. Peony 'Cora Stubbs' presents a beautiful bi-color with perfectly pink petals and an almost white tuft in the center, so cute. Peony 'Pink Derby' also has multiple layers of color in a big, bomb shaped flower. I can't believe the peony season is drawing near to the end. This week 8 bloom period is only the 2nd time in 10 years that we've had a very very late Week 8 season. I have really enjoyed having so much time with the blooms this year. I think we may even have a record-setting Week 9 next week. :-o Stay tuned!

2020 Giant Bloom on Intersectional Peony 'Gordon E. Simonson'

Intersectional Peony 'Gordon E. Simonson'

WOW! That's all I can really say about this Giant Bloom on my Intersectional Peony 'Gordon E. Simonson'. Of all the intersectional peonies I grow, the flowers on this one are definitely the largest. This is actually the first year this intersectional peony has bloomed for me. I first planted it in 2017, and it took until now to grow it to blooming size. The very first flower to open on this plant is super huge!! The petals on this flower just continued to grow and expand as it was open.

Intersectional Peony 'Gordon E. Simonson'

The color has faded some since it first opened, but for the most part, it has held the color pretty well, and is still a very nice shade. The substance on these petals is unbelievable! They are thick and really hold up well to the sun. This plant had 4 blooms on it for me this year, the first year that it has ever bloomed for me. What a giant stunner! I can't wait to see how this one does next year as well!! I wasn't sure if I would like this peony or not since it doesn't have a great name, but I am really impressed.

2020 Intersectional Peony Blooms Week 7 Very Late

Never Have I Ever...
1. Never Have I Ever had 4 weeks of intersectional peony cultivar blooms opening for the first time, until 2 weeks ago!
2. Never Have I Ever had 5 weeks of intersectional peony cultivar blooms opening for the first time, until last week!
3. Never Have I Ever had an intersectional peony open for the first time in Week 6, Late Bloom Season, until 2 weeks ago!
4. Never Have I Ever had an intersectional peony open for the first time in Week 7, Very Late Bloom Season, until just this past week!!

Wow!!! This has really been an exceptional year for the peony bloom season. While there are a few other blooms left on some cultivars that starting blooming earlier in the season like Intersectional Peony 'Bartzella', these two peonies 'Chief Black Hawk' and 'Berry Garcia' opened their first blooms this past week in Week 7. I just can't believe it. The weather really does make a difference in when during the year your peonies will bloom, how fast (or slow) all of buds on the plant will open, and how long the blooms will stay on the plant before falling off. If you'd like to see how this year stacks up to some of the previous years here at Southern Peony, take a look at our Southern Peony Bloom Dates page. It shows which years had flowers in which weeks for the past 10 years! This is pretty much the end of the intersectional bloom season. However there are still some herbaceous lactifloras that haven't opened yet. So I'm still looking forward to Week 8, Very Very Late!

2020 Peony Blooms Week 7 Very Late

The lactifloras are definitely out this week. I can't believe how many blooms we had opening this past week in May our 7th week of bloom! I have never seen a bloom season quite like this one, and I am just thrilled. I wish our spring weather could be this temperate and easy on the plants every year! I know the peonies have enjoyed the cooler nights and less hot days. Their blooms have lasted longer and they have opened slower, both for the season and on the bush. A peony that's blooms might only last 1 week in the year are now lasting 2 weeks. I am very grateful for this opportunity to observe, document, see, and smell the flowers this year for such an extended period. I hope your bloom season is going swell too!

2020 Tulip World Intersectional Peony 'Scrumdidleyumptious' Actually Peony 'Coral Charm'

Tulip World Intersectional Peony 'Scrumdidleyumptious'
Actually Peony 'Coral Charm'

Well, I suppose if you're going to get an incorrect peony for $12.95, Peony 'Coral Charm' is a great peony to get. I must say it is definitely disappointing to get the wrong peony from 2018 Tulip World Offers Intersectional Peony 'Scrumdidleyumptious' for $12.95!, but I think part of the value I help bring to all of you is uncovering the truth from the many and varied places you can buy a peony. In this case the peony was definitely not true to name/cultivar. It was not even true to type. It was supposed to be an Intersectional Peony, but a herbaceous peony came instead. The variety was supposed to be 'Scrumdidleyumptious' peony, but a 'Coral Charm' peony came instead.

Peony 'Coral Charm' is actually a great peony to grow in a Southern climate. It is actually a Southern Peony Best Performer. This peony was first recognized in 2015 Peony 'Coral Charm' Best Performer - Week 2. This peony is very vigorous here, will grow larger each year, and make a large enough plant that you will be able to divide it to share with friends and family. I know it is never a great feeling to get the wrong peony, but I am still grateful for this beautiful Peony 'Coral Charm' that I recieved.

2020 Peony 'White Cap' Has Loads of Blooms, But They're All Over the Floor

Peony 'White Cap'

The blooms on this Peony 'White Cap' are just gorgeous, and it seems to be a very vigorous and floriferous bloomer here in the South. However it definitely does not stand up well. The stems actually seem pretty strong, but the problem seems to be at the very base of the stem, which is where they all seem to bend. Each stem carries multiple, multiple buds and blooms, with 3 buds or more on each stem! I will definitely try to put a peony ring on this plant next year to see if it is happier and more presentable next time. If you're willing to stake and support this Peony 'White Cap', the color combination on these blooms is quite striking, a bold hot pink tone with a (mostly) white center!!

2020 Peony 'Sarah Bernhardt' Southern Peony Best Performer - Week 6

When it comes to giant fluffy, perfectly pink and sweetly fragrant blooms, Peony 'Sarah Bernhardt' can't be beat! It really does shrug off our Southern heat. However the blooms are very top heavy and must also be staked. The Peony 'Sarah Bernhardt' plant in this picture is being supported by a peony support ring which was put in place before the foliage grew, and as you can see the flowers are still flopping over the edge of the support ring a bit. Another alternative to staking them up is to cut them and bring them indoors. This peony also produces multiple buds and blooms per stem (another reason the stems are so top heavy). As you can see in the photo, one of the stems had a giant bloom on it with 3 large buds about to open on the same stem. Peony 'Sarah Bernhardt' was registered by Lemoine in 1906, another classic beauty!

2020 Intersectional Peony Blooms Week 6 Late

When there are mostly yellow intersectional peonies blooming in the intersectioanl peony bed, you know the season is drawing near the end. It is definitely bittersweet, but I am thankful for all of the gorgeous peony blooms I've had in my garden so far this year. Especially since this is actually the first year ever that I've had any intersectional peony bloom in Week 6 (Late). That is just awesome! This spring has been so slow to warm up, the peony bloom season has lasted longer. While intersectionals are my favorite type of peony, there are still several herbaceous peonies that have yet to bloom. There are actually a couple more intersectional peonies that have not bloomed yet in Week 6. So look out next week for some more Southern Peony record-setting intersectional peony blooms, in Week 7 (Very Late)! :-o

2020 Peony Blooms Week 6 Late

We have had quite the season so far. This past week has stayed relatively mild, with temps in the 70s or below. There have only been a few days in the 80s all spring thus far, and while they are calling for an 80 degree day tomorrow, all of the days next week will be below 80! This has made for a really long peony season this year, quite unlike any I've ever seen, and for some really confused peonies. As you can see below my Peony 'Sweeet May' and Peony 'Garden Peace' both bloomed this week. Looking at my Southern Peony Bloom Dates, they usually bloom in Week 3 (Early Mid) and Week 4 (Mid), respectively. The out of order blooms don't bother me, I am just enjoying the extra time with the flowers in the garden. :-)

2020 Intersectional Peony 'Joanna Marlene' from garden*breeze on Ebay

Well, after years of patiently waiting, I am happy to report that my Intersectional Peony 'Joanna Marlene' that I purchased from garden*breeze on Ebay, 2015 Intersectional Peony 'Joanna Marlene' on Ebay is authentic. The beauty and uniqueness of this one is unmistakeable and it matches it's original photo perfectly. This intersectional peony bloomed for me this past week. It wasn't the first time it bloomed, as it did bloom last year, 2019 Intersectional Peony 'Joanna Marlene' Update. However I missed the bloom completely and only got photos of the bud and the remnants of the bloom. However this year, I got some photos of this delicate beauty in all her ruffled, pastel two-toned glory, and I am in love! If you don't grow Intersectional Peony 'Joanna Marlene' yet, take a look at the gorgeous photos below to see what you're missing out on!

2020 Tree Peony 'Koukamon' Blooms in Week 5 Late Mid Season!

Tree Peony 'Koukamon' 皇嘉門 (Floral Gate)

The weather must be really confusing the peonies this year. My Tree Peony 'Koukamon' 皇嘉門 (Floral Gate) bloomed in Week 5 this year! I have never had a tree peony bloom this late (that wasn't a brand new spring planted addition to the garden). Regardless, I am really enjoying the spacing out of this peony season. I kind of wish it could be like this every year! It looks like this tree peony first bloomed for me in 2018, and it bloomed in Week 2 Early season! So you can see what a difference it has had in the bloom season this year, almost 3 weeks later than normal! Regardless of when this Tree Peony 'Koukamon' blooms, I am grateful for it. This is such a gorgeous tree peony and an awesome shade of purple!

2020 Peony 'Festiva Maxima' Southern Peony Best Performer - Week 5

A Southern peony classic, Peony 'Festiva Maxima' is definitely a Southern Peony Best Performer. This peony will grow and multiply so well you will have enough to share with friends and neighbors. You can divide it easily, no problem, and this peony does not skip a beat. It is filled with loads of giant, fluffly double white blooms, with scattered red flecks in its center. The perfume is heavenly - you just can't get enough of its fragrance. The only downside to this peony is that the blooms are so heavy they will lay on the ground unless you stake or tie them up. As you can see I tied mine up after the blooms started to open. Your best bet for keeping these beauties looking their best is a peony cage or plant support ring put out when the foliage is first emerging. Peony 'Festiva Maxima' was hybridized by Miellez and registered in 1851, a true classic!
